Rathnam Movie Review: Action is at its peak in South Indian movies. A large section of cinema lovers watch South Indian movies only for this reason. Currently, the movie ‘Rathnam’, which was released on 26th April in two languages, Tamil and Telugu, is in the news. Ever since the poster of this action-drama movie was released, the audience was curious about it. The poster of the movie showing bloodshed was a new experience for the audience. However, now the movie has been released.
The lead actor’s character in the 2 hour 36 minute long film ‘Ratnam’ is played by Vishal Krishna. One of the biggest features of South cinema is that no matter how much mystery, thrill or bloodshed the story is, there is always an effort to add a tadka of laughter to it. In South, Yogi Babu represents Bollywood’s ‘Johnny Lever’. His comedy timing, style and expressions are very similar to Johnny Lever. Whenever Yogi Babu enters the screen, the audience starts laughing without him doing or saying anything. In ‘Ratnam’ too, Yogi Babu was seen doing his job very well.
First let’s talk about the story of the film. The hero ‘Ratnam’ is the henchman of the local MLA Panneer Selvam. That means the MLA has complete trust in him. Ratnam is the confidant of all the MLA’s dark deeds. One day a girl comes to Vellore for an interview. Here an attempt is made to attack her. This is where the hero of the film ‘Ratnam’ makes a powerful entry with action. Ratnam saves the girl. However, the crisis was not averted. The girl’s life was still in danger. Ratnam becomes her protector. He stays with the girl like a shadow and protects her.
The whole craze of ‘Ratnam’ is based on live action, which can also be called visual effects or VFX. In South cinema, a lot of money is spent on live-action shots (live-action shots in filmmaking and video production), in the Hollywood style. The dangerous and impossible looking live action shots are converted into exact images through computers. This is called Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). That is, VFX is created by merging still or animated visual content and scenes filmed with a camera through imaging software.
If we talk about ‘Ratnam’, the VFX of the bus falling into the ditch, truck hitting the car and the hero jumping into the fire have turned out to be impressive. However, the action in the bus etc. should have been improved further. ‘Ratnam’, which has been released worldwide, is a mixture of action and VFX. That is, for those who get a thrill from watching bloodshed, fighting, dangerous car accidents, aerial fighting etc., ‘Ratnam’ is a fun film.
In the film, you will enjoy watching the scenes like sickle fights, the angry hero attacking the goons like a lion. As a director, Hari Gopalakrishnan Nadar has worked very hard on the film. He has also written the story of the film. When a writer directs a film, he knows how much depth a scene has, from which angle it has to be shot. That is, the complete image of the scene is in his mind. However, in one line, the biggest feature of action films is its speed, in this case ‘Ratnam’ lagged behind. The screenplay seems to be moving slow at some places.
The hero is playing the role of an ‘angry young man’. Amitabh Bachchan also played this character for more than half of his film career in Bollywood. However, Ratnam’s angry young man is at its extreme. A set was prepared on the border of Andhra Pradesh for the film. Visually, the film is eye-catching.
The cinematographer of ‘Ratnam’ is M Sukumar. His work is clearly visible. TS Jai has edited the film. Both of them have previously worked with Vishal and Hari K in Thaamirabharani (2007) and Poojai (2014). That is, this is an old team, so the mutual understanding is good.
Devi Sri Prasad has given music to ‘Ratnam’. The background music is also thrilling. Devi Prasad is also a part of Hari’s old team. He has previously worked with Hari in Aaru, Singam, Singam 2, Venghai and Saamy Square.
As far as acting is concerned, apart from Vishal Krishna, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu and Gautham Menon are in the lead roles in ‘Ratnam’. Apart from Karthikeyan Santhanam, the film has been produced by Zee Studios. Since no big film has been released in Telugu this week, this is a time of great profit for ‘Ratnam’. ‘Ratnam’, which has a U certificate, was also heavily publicised.
Those viewers who are Vishal’s fans and have seen Hari’s previous work will like this film. ‘Ratnam’ is different from the category of common South films. This is a high pitch action-drama film. For the fans of South cinema, ‘Ratnam’ is a worth watching film.
